Ideas For Use
This web site has real teachers’ testimonies and how they use the white
boards for their subject areas
Science - creating a diagram of a cell, electrical
circuit, water cycle, etc. Create a slide show where each component is added,
labeled and put as a separate slide so you can build something in sequential
steps. Then save to computer for review or information for kids who were absent
or need review. Literacy - Put passage on screen and have kids underline or
highlight or mark key information for discussion or better understanding of
passages.
Math- Use with
TI-86
Virtual Calculator, teaching geometry concepts, calculus, and unit circle approach to develop
trigonometry functions.
Grammar practice: Write words that make a sentence. Scramble the
words and have the kids to together the words to make their own sentences. http://www.pershing.k12.nv.us/elementary/SMART.htm
Growing
stories: Have
students come to the SmartBoard at different times
during the day to add an original sentence to a story. You could begin with a prompt or
have students begin the story themselves. http://emints.more.net/info/northeast/techtips.html#tip%204
Literacy
Read with the class, drawing attention to key parts from the text. Children can
then come up and highlight or underline words in the word and sentence level
work. Key phrases, dialogue and the manipulation of text can be used by the
children as a board activity or as a follow up in the computer suite.

Write a daily newsletter
article with students. We discuss what we learned that day and write a
paragraph about it. Students use the on-screen keyboard to help with writing
the article. Add digital camera pictures, clipart, etc. At the end of each
week, print the newsletter and students take it home. http://www.pershing.k12.nv.us/elementary/SMART.htm
Smart Board Remarks
Teachers
report that science experiments done on the SMART Board have better student
results than before the board was introduced into the classroom. Ralph D'Ambrosio, science chairperson, said, "Viewing makes
understanding subject matter more efficient. Inquiry based learning, which
displays a situation on the board, creates numerous questions and answers that
enhance learning."
George Dreher, a chemistry, physics and
forensic science teacher at the high school, spoke about students' reactions.
"Students like it because it's novel. It's visual and that's a completely
different way to learn. It's a good tool," Dreher
said.
When asked
about SMART Boards, high school student Chris Dioguardi
replied, "I feel that the SMART Boards are an excellent addition to the
learning environment of the high school. Teachers are able to access the
Internet and show the material to the class without the use of an individual
lap top for each student. SMART Boards enhance the understanding of material."
Doug Sheer,
social studies chairperson, said, "SMART Boards have opened up the world
of geography that we could not have before. If you're excited about teaching,
this technology has truly enhanced it!"
